When you hear the word “boudoir” you think lingerie and a bed behind closed doors. Nope! We LOVE to go to the beach on Lake Michigan. We go early in the morning while the sun comes up over the beach and before there are tons of people. We pick a quiet little dune and shoot til out hearts desire.
It’s frustrating enough to shop for every day clothes, never mind lingerie. I mean, trying to choose between three different brands of cotton underwear is a chore, right? Now you have to find something sexy to wear for a photo session?!!
Don’t be afraid to ask a friend for their advice and we are ALWAYS available to talk you through the hard decisions. In fact, the first thing you receive from JLReis Photography after booking your session is our “What to Wear Guide!”
Start by figuring out the look you’re gong for: Dramatic, sexy, classy, pinup, bridal, or completely unclothed. Figuring out your boudoir wardrobe can be exciting! Choose your favorite colors and try on plenty of various types of lingerie.
- Wear a plain colored dress-shirt tied at the waist, it looks great with underwear or shorts!
- Not ready to take it all off? Wear an oversized sweater teamed with thick knee high socks or even thigh highs and heels
- Wear a jersey from his favorite team combined with shorts and knee socks. A bonus for you if you have his favorite players jersey or one from his HS glory days!
- Corsets fit any figure, especially a plus-size one and JLReis Photography may have the largest selection of corsets in NE Wisconsin
- Don’t be afraid to try out bodysuits, thigh highs, stockings, knee-high socks, high-waisted underwear, and slips. You’d be surprised to see what flatters you the most!
- Heels are a popular choice! Even a pair of cute tennis shoes can be spunky and fun! Stay away from flats/thong sandals and remember, we have over 50 pairs of shoes in size 6 to size 11!
Here are a few online shops that I recommend for amazing lingerie, but keep in mind that there are some local stores that have great options, such as Target, Victoria’s Secret, Torrid, Kohl’s and even Walmart! I’ve gotten some GREAT finds at local thrift stores, too!

“You are imperfect, permanently and inevitably flawed. And you are beautiful.” ~ Amy Bloom
So many women have a terrible relationship with their own bodies and I mean to put a stop to that. Boudoir photography (or intimate photography or glamour photography – it’s all the same) is the perfect way for me to do it. Every client I’ve worked with over the past seven years has been beautiful just the way they were and they’ve all loved the experience and how they looked in their photos.
There are more reasons to have your photos done than there are NOT to. My first back to work client had her photos done to surprise her husband on their wedding day. I’ve done sessions for anniversary gifts, birthday celebrations or milestone dates. My favorite sessions have been the ones where the client does it for themselves, those are the ones that make my heart sing.
“Acceptance” and “self-love” and “body positivity” are huge buzzwords/phrases in social media but nothing has changed in my opinion. The Kardashian/Jenner clan are still Photoshopping their photos to the point their own kids wouldn’t recognize them, but they aren’t the only ones. SM “influencers” are getting their lips and their boobs and their asses filled at an alarming rate – it’s to the point that everyone looks the same: poofy lips, permanently alarmed eyebrows, fake high cheekbones, huge badonkadonks on tiny bodies … there is no individuality on the Internet and that is SAD.
Boudoir photography isn’t about being a size three (no one is a size three and you can’t convince me otherwise, lol). You don’t have to be 23 or weigh 105 lbs … EVERY BODY IS A BOUDOIR BODY and we’ll prove it to you!
Photography isn’t about changing your looks. Photography is about having a memory you can hold in your hand that makes you remember how you felt that day. I edit your photos, but you will never look as though you weigh 30 lbs less or wear three sizes smaller. If you ask for that kind of editing, we’re gonna have a long talk, doll. I may not be the photographer for you.
Speaking of photographers, you should hire a photographer that you feel comfortable with. Don’t hire someone because of their pricing (high prices don’t necessarily mean good service and low prices don’t have to mean crap work). That’s why I like to meet with you BEFORE you book a session. It’s only fair that you get to see what a goofball I am, as well as see just how important it is for me to give you the type of session that will bring out the best in you.
I’ll answer all of your questions, including the ones you may not even know you have. I want you to feel comfortable with me because being in front of a camera, dressed in the tiniest of outfits will make you feel vulnerable and that’s SCARY! But Ipromise, by the time we’re done you’ll have had the best time of your life!
Behind the Scenes Appleton Boudoir
If you’ve had your photos done by JLReis Photography, you’ve met Prudence and I and you know that if nothing else, we are batshit crazy in the most loving and hysterical kind of way.
One of the biggest things we hear from our girlies is that they don’t know what to expect when they come for a session. It’s simple really, you walk in and we smother you in love and laughter. We go through your wardrobe and all of the panties you bought special from Vickie’s, we pick out shoes and jewelry from the Boudie Closet. Then we lay out your outfits in order and plop your ass in the makeup chair .
Once we have you where we want you, we start telling you jokes and stories and Pru proceeds to make you camera ready. She doesn’t make you “beautiful”. You’re already beautiful. Prudence accentuates your eyes and your lips and does your hair so it frames your gorgeous face.
While you’re in the chair we talk about anything and everything – just normal girlie stuff that ALL women talk about. I might take some photos of you in the chair to share with group (you’re in group, right? If not, get OVER there and join!!!)
We know what’s going through your mind while you’re sitting there in Pru’s chair: “I have NO IDEA how to look sexy in front of a camera”. We got you, boo! Prudence, our in-house “Instigator of Underwear”, will get right down on the floor – because I’m old as dirt and if I get down, I may not get up – and show you every pose. We touch you inappropriately to get just the right turn in your ankle and pop in your booty. And like my mama always said: “If it don’t hurt, you ain’t doing it right.”
When we book, we always tell clients to stretch in the days before their session. We aren’t kidding, posing is hard work and you’re gonna feel your session the day after!
Some of the poses and facial expressions will feel awkward and sometimes right down stupid, but trust us, we know what we’re doing and everything we tell you to do is to make your photos look amazing.
When we’re done, we peel you out of your panties bundle you back into your sweats and walk you out to your vehicle. Later that day I go through your photos and choose the best of the best and pick one for a sneakie-peek.
Pru and I enjoy your session as much, if not more than you do. We LOVE making you laugh and we love helping you see that you really are gorgeous. I have spent so much of my life building women up, being able to actually SHOW them is amazing and blows me away every time.
Couples boudoir is a lot more fun than I thought it would be! E and G look like they had a great time as well – so HOT
Hair and makeup by our very own Instigator of Underwear, Prudence Walker
… of friendship, of the future, of life.
I have been so lucky in my life to meet SO MANY wonderful people. Some have come into my life for only a short time, leaving me with wonderful memories of laughter shared and a few have stayed, becoming good friends and sometimes my partner in crime.
I met Prudence just a few years ago and I knew immediately that we’d be friends. We have so much in common and most importantly she loves to laugh. If you know me at all, you know that laughter is an important part of my life
Lucky for me, my camera loves her.
Beside being the hair and makeup artist extraordinaire that brings out the beauty in the girlies in front my camera, Prudence is also my “session director”, in charge of in-studio hospitality and entertainment, keeper of the dirty words and mover of furniture.
She also gets right down on the floor next to our clients and shows them how to pose for the camera.
And you can see she sure knows how to do THAT.
You know that show on television “Murder Chose Me”? Boudoir photography chose ME. Coming from a place that nearly all women come from – that my body isn’t perfect – my biggest goal is to make women feel beautiful and to document that beauty so that they an look back at it on any day and SEE the beauty that is in them. Just as they are.
Today I’m answering some questions from the women in my group about why shooting boudoir is my dream job, and what happens during a session with JLReis Boudoir Photography.
How do you show your work to potential clients?
I shoot with models on a regular basis in order to try out new ideas or props and I am lucky enough to occasionally get a client who gives me rights to use their photos publicly because they’re proud and excited about them and want to show them off.
I make it very clear to my clients that 1) They NEVER have to take their clothes off and 2) NO ONE will see their photos without their permission. Your photos go from my camera to my work machine to my studio machine to your eyes. I don’t do online galleries and all image reveals are in person. Your images are printed by reliable and bonded print houses in Grand Rapids MI or St. Louis, MO. There is never a chance that some goomer from Sam’s Club or Walgreen’s will get a look at you in your dainties.
How is boudoir different from other types of shoots?
Boudoir, or glamour even, has the ability to make a woman remember every good feeling she’s ever had about herself, more so than any other kind of photography. Graduation photos and wedding photos, your most typical professional photo sessions, just don’t compare with seeing yourself in a beautiful dress or your favorite lingerie. Boudoir/glamour photography is really all about the client.
I shoot women from 18 all the way up to their 50’s, all shapes and sizes and not one of them has ever not looked at their photos and had their mouth drop open.
All women LOVE to get dressed up and look gorgeous; I use Halloween as an example all the time. Just look at how women dress on Halloween, you see a lot more sexy outfits than scary ones. Boudoir/glamour is for every woman that wants to feels beautiful and really, what woman doesn’t?
WHY are you a boudoir photographer?
To make women love themselves. It’s as simple as that. If you’re having a crap day and you feel like you look like shit, taking out your photos and remembering how you felt the day you had them taken can lift your spirits immediately.
Do I think a woman’s looks are the most important thing in their lives. Of course not. A good heart is much more important, but despite all the hoohah to the contrary in media, how a woman think she looks definitely plays a part in how she feels in other areas of her life.
What do you love about boudoir photography?
Getting it through a woman’s head that she really IS beautiful. EVERY woman is beautiful and I’ve taken on the job of bringing that beauty from inside them to the outside.
Because of the intimate content, do you advertise differently?
I actually shoot very little that can’t be shown publicly, but I do have separate Facebook pages for my boudoir/glamour sessions and my senior sessions. High school seniors are my other love – they, boys AND girls, have many of the same insecurities that adult women do and photography does wonders to help them see that they are someone more than what they’ve been during their high school career.
Do you ever shoot nudes?
I haven’t, but there’s always a first time.
What do you do to help your clients relax during their session?
I am a natural clown and when I was a kid I wanted to be a stand up comedian. I try and have a short half hour meeting with a new client before the day of their shoot. We talk about what they want to wear, how they want their hair done, their favorite parts of their body … that way they don’t walk in the door and hear: “Hi! Take your clothes off!”
I reassure them that they don’t have to worry about posing and that I will make them look their best.
Once we start shooting, I never stop talking. NEVER. It’s the best way to get a natural expression from my girls.
What’s your favorite part about shooting boudoir?
My client’s reaction to her photos – HANDS DOWN.
What does your studio look like?
Boho, shabby chic girly studio apartment. I have a claw foot tub that I move outside onto my shaded patio, tons of pillows, lots of light. I have several pieces of furniture, including a round chaise lounger. Mirrors and chiffon and candles … it’s all very romantic and girly and sexy.
What products do you sell the most?
My 8×8, 24 image Little Black Book is my biggest seller. I also offer 2×3 accordion albums for husbands or boyfriends that travel.
Do you shoot couples?
Oddly enough, I am taking some courses about the specifics of shooting couples right now. I have a some previous clients who are very intrigued by the idea. I had said in the past that I would NEVER shoot couples, but like they say: “Never say never, lol!”
Who inspired you?
Like anyone who shoots primarily women, Sue Bryce is my hero … while she doesn’t shoot boudoir, per se, her business model is something I think all female photographers aspire to. Jen Rozenbaum is another of my idols. she’s very cool and down to earth and takes incredible boudoir photos.
HMUA? What the heck is that?
Have you ever looked at a magazine and thought “God, I’d love to look like that!” You’re in luck, my HMUA – hair and makeup stylist – can make it happen.
While you can get away without it, a hair and makeup styling is a must for a boudoir session. You want to look your absolute most beautiful and HMUAs know all the tricks to make you look like yourself, with a ton of oomph. HMUAs do your hair, give you smoky eyes and thick fringe-y lashes and a silky, sexy pout. You’ll love what you see in the mirror and your SO will have their socks knocked off.
When I first met Prudence, I liked her immediately, but I had no idea just how important she’d become to me, professionally AND personally. She has brought my photography and my work to another whole level. Although I am a hairdresser myself, I concentrated on nails and was NEVER good at hair and make-up. Prudence has lifted the worries I had before and during a session.
Prudence is also opening a salon locally very soon, as well as being the premiere stylist at JLReis Photography, so we sat down and talked about some of the important questions that we thought y’all might want to know!
What made you want to get into the Hair and Makeup industry?
I LOVE all aspects of art; growing up, I was a very creative child. I grew up in a family of believers and listeners and givers. When one of my other goals in life was not going to work, my Uncle (HMUA), said to me “Why not give to the world what you were given?” … the ability to see beauty in others even if they didn’t see it themselves. So I combined my passion of art/design and compassion of helping others and went to school for barber/cosmetology. Later in life I went on to get my instructor’s license to help others achieve their HMUA goals as well.
What’s your favorite part about doing Hair and Makeup for Boudoir/Glamour Sessions?
The transformation of it all from the minute you walk through the door: the outfits, your expectations, your fears, your laughter, the moment you look in the mirror, when it all comes together and you strut out the door like you own it.
What can clients expect from you when they hire you to do their hair and makeup?
That they can trust me with everything, I listen …
How would you describe your style?
How would you describe me? 😉 Hmmm … “Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak ~ Rachel Zoe” Okay, sometimes look like a hurricane ☺ but I’m having a whole lot of fun
What makes you stand out in the HMUA industry?
I LISTEN, it’s not about me but you ☺
Where can you see hair and makeup trends go over the next few years
Everything repeats itself, but I can see simple and classic (it never goes out of style) But to each their own
What’s your favorite part of a Boudoir/Glamour Session?
All of it, but when the pictures come out and you and all of your friends and family go WOW! The glow in your face!
Other than Boudoir/Glamour Sessions, what else do you do hair and makeup for?
I love traveling for weddings! I’m the open minded stylist/ friend listening and helping you
What’s in your makeup bag?
A little of everything … remember, I’m just like you
What do you like to do on your weekends?
Now if I tell you everything about me what fun would that be 😉
Is there anything else that you want people to know about you?
I am here to help, even with the little things that you may have forgotten about yourself. Mixed in with some sass, class and maybe some crazy fun! But most importantly I LISTEN to what you need. I believe in kindness, I believe in helping others with no questions asked, I see the good in everyone first, I believe in good wholesome conversations. I believed in myself for 48 years when no one else did, beside a few close family and friends. I give my worth away to prove myself over and over again. I never accept a compliment cause its not about me it’s about helping. I believe I am smart enough to survive anything. That’s been my whole life and being.
The experience was great. She was amazing to work with and has a great personality. […] But seriously 9.5/10 ~ Amber C
I have loved working with Pru! I’ve gone from no makeup, to LOTS of makeup! […] As to hair, if anyone can take this wavy, curly rats nest and make it look fantastic, she does. That’s a brave and experienced person right there! ~ Emily P
She’s amazing she does great work I’m even having her do my hair and my daughter’s hair for my wedding vow renewal. She cut my son’s hair the other day amazing job he is very very happy with it. I would recommend her to anybody. ~ Becky M
Prudence Walker did my hair and I have a lot of hair to deal with I told her that I wanted blonde highlights and my hair layered and thinned […] lo and behold the finished product was completely amazing my head felt lighter, the style was amazing and I’ve never had more compliments on the color in my hair… I would highly recommend her to anybody […] ~ Lori K
She is Fantastic!! ~ Melissa V
Prudence Walker is amazing with hair…she moved away on me and i used to have the cutest short hair styles and colors but since she moved away i have let it grow because i cant find anyone to cut or color it the way she used to. ~ Vickie J
I absolutely love Pru!! SHE does amazing hair! I drive 2 hours just to get my hair done by Pru ~ Jennifer B
If you choose to do your own hair and make-up for your session:
- Please arrive at the studio with your hair and makeup already done. We do have hairspray and curling irons if you need to fluff up the curls etc. We want to have enough time to pick out your outfits and more time to shoot 🙂
- We highly recommend that you wear a foundation even if you don’t normally wear it; it really makes the skin look flawless and silky smooth in photographs. Please wear a moisturizer under your foundation
- Bring some of your makeup with you so that you can touch it or a different color lipstick to change up the look for your second set
- We recommend starting with a more nude or natural lipstick and then progressing to darker lipstick as we transition into your second or third set
- False eyelashes are HIGHLY recommended for your shoot. If Pru isn’t doing your make-up, make sure you’ve applied them before you get here. You can buy nice lashes from WalMart or Sally’s – and don’t forget the glue! I personally recommend the tube withthe liner instead of “squooshy: glue 🙂
There are quite a few tutorials here in one place right here (I love the eyeshadow in the first video!)
MissJ is my little superhero. She did this session as a gift to herself and she deserved it,
A big thank you to her for allowing me to share these shots from her studio session. Not only did she rock her session, but she inspired me to finish the wings I’d been putting off for about a year!

This was the second boudoir session with my studio rep, MsEmily. It’s always a blast to shoot with Emily, she has a sharp sense of humor and a mutual love of tattoos (in fact she’s gotten another since this session!).
I asked Em how she felt about her experience with JLReis Boudoir Photography so far. “Once I saw my photos you did for the 1st time, I had to go home and apologize to my husband. You brought out the beauty he sees every day that I never saw,” she said. “Having you photograph me has been a truly life changing experience!” There’s no real trick to how to act at a boudoir session, all you have to do is let yourself go and have a good time – that results in your best photos.
About her overall photography experience, Emily says: “Being photographed by you is more fun than having a pocket full of hundred dollar bills on Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras!!!”
Emily is a “regular” woman, just like you and me and her photos turn out great because she trusts that I know what I’m doing and throws herself into the moment. Her true personality comes through in these images – sassy, flirty and fun all the way. I’m so glad I met her and that she was interested in representing my studio as a “regular” woman.
