I Don’t Take “Good” Photos

Wisconsin Boudoir Photography

“You are imperfect, permanently and inevitably flawed. And you are beautiful.” ~ Amy Bloom

So many women have a terrible relationship with their own bodies and I mean to put a stop to that. Boudoir photography (or intimate photography or glamour photography – it’s all the same) is the perfect way for me to do it. Every client I’ve worked with over the past seven years has been beautiful just the way they were and they’ve all loved the experience and how they looked in their photos.

There are more reasons to have your photos done than there are NOT to. My first back to work client had her photos done to surprise her husband on their wedding day. I’ve done sessions for anniversary gifts, birthday celebrations or milestone dates. My favorite sessions have been the ones where the client does it for themselves, those are the ones that make my heart sing.

“Acceptance” and “self-love” and “body positivity” are huge buzzwords/phrases in social media but nothing has changed in my opinion. The Kardashian/Jenner clan are still Photoshopping their photos to the point their own kids wouldn’t recognize them, but they aren’t the only ones. SM “influencers” are getting their lips and their boobs and their asses filled at an alarming rate – it’s to the point that everyone looks the same: poofy lips, permanently alarmed eyebrows, fake high cheekbones, huge badonkadonks on tiny bodies … there is no individuality on the Internet and that is SAD.

Boudoir photography isn’t about being a size three (no one is a size three and you can’t convince me otherwise, lol). You don’t have to be 23 or weigh 105 lbs … EVERY BODY IS A BOUDOIR BODY and we’ll prove it to you!

Photography isn’t about changing your looks. Photography is about having a memory you can hold in your hand that makes you remember how you felt that day. I edit your photos, but you will never look as though you weigh 30 lbs less or wear three sizes smaller. If you ask for that kind of editing, we’re gonna have a long talk, doll. I may not be the photographer for you.

Speaking of photographers, you should hire a photographer that you feel comfortable with. Don’t hire someone because of their pricing (high prices don’t necessarily mean good service and low prices don’t have to mean crap work). That’s why I like to meet with you BEFORE you book a session. It’s only fair that you get to see what a goofball I am, as well as see just how important it is for me to give you the type of session that will bring out the best in you.

I’ll answer all of your questions, including the ones you may not even know you have. I want you to feel comfortable with me because being in front of a camera, dressed in the tiniest of outfits will make you feel vulnerable and that’s SCARY! But Ipromise, by the time we’re done you’ll have had the best time of your life!

February Boudie Call

Booking for March!

Due to overwhelming interest in last month’s event, Pru & I are holding our second model call of 2019! We’re looking to shoot seven different themes in March, no experience required. We are on the hunt for REAL PEOPLE of any shape or size that are willing to sign a release and allow their photos to be used by us for advertising purposes (including, but not limited to, Facebook, Instagram, website, etc.)

It’s hard take that first step and we have nothing but tons of love for our clients who’ve come in, thrown their clothes off and contorted themselves into some pretty painful positions. We are grateful for those women who allow us to share their photos in any capacity and we can’t wait to do it again and again. We also love those babes who prefer NOT to share their images with anyone and we NEVER post your images without your permission and a signed release.

Intimate photography isn’t just a simple makeup session and photo shoot. It’s not just something you do for someone else. Having these photos taken can be the biggest ego boost you ever have. When you come and hang out with us we make you laugh, we give you the gift of discovering yourself. We tease out your femininity. We give you the opportunity to experience that side of you that you’ve always wanted to.

Boudoir photography is a life changing experience and every woman should experience this side of them. Our boudie call babes help other women see that they can do this too!

FINE PRINT: The $125 deposit is NON-REFUNDABLE. If you don’t show, you don’t get your money back. ONE reschedule is allowed. Photos will be used for advertising purposes of any kind. You are not tagged by us, but you may tag yourself. Five images are included in the model call but additional images/products are available for purchase during your reveal with your product credit.

REFERRAL PERKS: Refer a friend who books a model call and you get $50 towards a FULL PRICED TEASE SESSION (hair/makeup not included). Referral credits don’t expire and are stackable. Your friend must mention your name at time of booking.

Birthday Girl

When my husband and I were rolling down the highway 30 years ago at 5am on our way to the hospital it never occurred to me that I’d someday be taking 30th birthday photos of the beautiful young woman that was my daughter.

Thirty years of love, laughter and joy. This kid is everything and more that I envisioned thirty years ago and I thank God for her every day.

Want to celebrate your own birthday in a special way??? Birthday glamour (and boudoir) sessions are easy to set up. Just email me or Facebook PM and we’ll get the ball rolling

HMUA – Hair & Makeup Artist For Boudoir

HMUA? What the heck is that?

Prudence Walker WI HMUA boudoir
Prudence Walker – owner at Rustic Cuts & Co. Premiere hair and makeup artist at JLReis Glamoir Photography

Have you ever looked at a magazine and thought “God, I’d love to look like that!” You’re in luck, my HMUA – hair and makeup stylist – can make it happen.

While you can get away without it, a hair and makeup styling is a must for a boudoir session. You want to look your absolute most beautiful and HMUAs know all the tricks to make you look like yourself, with a ton of oomph. HMUAs do your hair, give you smoky eyes and thick fringe-y lashes and a silky, sexy pout. You’ll love what you see in the mirror and your SO will have their socks knocked off.

When I first met Prudence, I liked her immediately, but I had no idea just how important she’d become to me, professionally AND personally. She has brought my photography and my work to another whole level. Although I am a hairdresser myself, I concentrated on nails and was NEVER good at hair and make-up. Prudence has lifted the worries I had before and during a session.

Prudence is also opening a salon locally very soon, as well as being the premiere stylist at JLReis Photography, so we sat down and talked about some of the important questions that we thought y’all might want to know!

What made you want to get into the Hair and Makeup industry?
I LOVE all aspects of art; growing up, I was a very creative child. I grew up in a family of believers and listeners and givers. When one of my other goals in life was not going to work, my Uncle (HMUA), said to me “Why not give to the world what you were given?” … the ability to see beauty in others even if they didn’t see it themselves. So I combined my passion of art/design and compassion of helping others and went to school for barber/cosmetology. Later in life I went on to get my instructor’s license to help others achieve their HMUA goals as well.

What’s your favorite part about doing Hair and Makeup for Boudoir/Glamour Sessions?
The transformation of it all from the minute you walk through the door: the outfits, your expectations, your fears, your laughter, the moment you look in the mirror, when it all comes together and you strut out the door like you own it.

What can clients expect from you when they hire you to do their hair and makeup?
That they can trust me with everything, I listen …

How would you describe your style?
How would you describe me? 😉 Hmmm … “Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak ~ Rachel Zoe” Okay, sometimes look like a hurricane ☺ but I’m having a whole lot of fun

What makes you stand out in the HMUA industry?
I LISTEN, it’s not about me but you ☺

Where can you see hair and makeup trends go over the next few years
Everything repeats itself, but I can see simple and classic (it never goes out of style) But to each their own

What’s your favorite part of a Boudoir/Glamour Session?
All of it, but when the pictures come out and you and all of your friends and family go WOW! The glow in your face!

Other than Boudoir/Glamour Sessions, what else do you do hair and makeup for?
I love traveling for weddings! I’m the open minded stylist/ friend listening and helping you

What’s in your makeup bag?
A little of everything … remember, I’m just like you

What do you like to do on your weekends?
Now if I tell you everything about me what fun would that be 😉

Is there anything else that you want people to know about you?
I am here to help, even with the little things that you may have forgotten about yourself. Mixed in with some sass, class and maybe some crazy fun! But most importantly I LISTEN to what you need. I believe in kindness, I believe in helping others with no questions asked, I see the good in everyone first, I believe in good wholesome conversations. I believed in myself for 48 years when no one else did, beside a few close family and friends. I give my worth away to prove myself over and over again. I never accept a compliment cause its not about me it’s about helping. I believe I am smart enough to survive anything. That’s been my whole life and being.

 Client Feedback

The experience was great. She was amazing to work with and has a great personality. […] But seriously 9.5/10 ~ Amber C

I have loved working with Pru! I’ve gone from no makeup, to LOTS of makeup! […] As to hair, if anyone can take this wavy, curly rats nest and make it look fantastic, she does. That’s a brave and experienced person right there! ~ Emily P

She’s amazing she does great work I’m even having her do my hair and my daughter’s hair for my wedding vow renewal. She cut my son’s hair the other day amazing job he is very very happy with it. I would recommend her to anybody. ~ Becky M

Prudence Walker did my hair and I have a lot of hair to deal with I told her that I wanted blonde highlights and my hair layered and thinned […] lo and behold the finished product was completely amazing my head felt lighter, the style was amazing and I’ve never had more compliments on the color in my hair… I would highly recommend her to anybody […] ~ Lori K

She is Fantastic!! ~ Melissa V

Prudence Walker is amazing with hair…she moved away on me and i used to have the cutest short hair styles and colors but since she moved away i have let it grow because i cant find anyone to cut or color it the way she used to. ~ Vickie J

I absolutely love Pru!! SHE does amazing hair! I drive 2 hours just to get my hair done by Pru ~ Jennifer B

If you choose to do your own hair and make-up for your session:

  • Please arrive at the studio with your hair and makeup already done. We do have hairspray and curling irons if you need to fluff up the curls etc. We want to have enough time to pick out your outfits and more time to shoot 🙂
  • We highly recommend that you wear a foundation even if you don’t normally wear it; it really makes the skin look flawless and silky smooth in photographs. Please wear a moisturizer under your foundation
  • Bring some of your makeup with you so that you can touch it or a different color lipstick to change up the look for your second set
  • We recommend starting with a more nude or natural lipstick and then progressing to darker lipstick as we transition into your second or third set
  • False eyelashes are HIGHLY recommended for your shoot. If Pru isn’t doing your make-up, make sure you’ve applied them before you get here. You can buy nice lashes from WalMart or Sally’s – and don’t forget the glue! I personally recommend the tube withthe liner instead of “squooshy: glue 🙂

There are quite a few tutorials here in one place right here (I love the eyeshadow in the first video!)

Happy New Year

Happy New Year!

2017 was a year of changes for me and for JLReis Photography. I know the people I want to reach and what I want to do with my business, it’s never changed since May 1, 2014, the official opening day of my first studio.

It’s my goal to make just ONE woman see their own, real beauty – just one, EVERY CHANCE I GET. I want to muffle the voices in her head that tells her she’s not beautiful, not worthy, not enough. If I can do that for that ONE woman, I’ll have met my goal.

The stories I’ve heard the past year, the sessions I’ve done, helped me see that women – ALL WOMEN – feel the same, no matter their age, shape or dress size. I know because I’ve felt, and sometimes to continue to feel, the same way.

But … no matter what life we live, no matter where we live, no matter what kind of work we do, whether we’re married or single, twenty years old or eighty, women are fucking forces of nature.

We face the shittiest days of our lives and we manage to get through – and help our loved ones through. We make shit HAPPEN. We are so much more than we allow ourselves to believe.

I am humbled by the stories you’ve shared with me … for you to open up to me and tell me your thought and fears and trust me to keep them means the world to me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Happy new year to all of us, I can’t wait to see what we do and become in 2018!

Reason #Six

Reason to Have your Boudoir\Glamour Portrait Taken

Reason #6: No one cares what you look like.

!!!GASP!!

Isn’t that a shitty reason for a photographer to give? Isn’t that a terribly awful shitty thing for a photographer that says she’s trying to RAISE women’s self-esteem to say to a bunch of women?

I thought this reason was so important that it needed a whole damn blog post.

On the surface it sounds shitty, but think about it. Nearly everyone is so wrapped up in their own bullshit that they don’t have the time or the inclination to pay attention what other women look like. So we all sit in our heads and imagine what OTHERS are thinking of us, when in reality, no ONE is thinking of us.

Everybody has issues with their looks or their bodies, no matter our size. I’ve had thin-thin-thin women walk in and say they’re embarrassed for ME to see them, cuz they know they don’t look like my other clients. WTF? Of course you don’t look like my other clients, you’re YOU. Over the years I’ve had clients (hair clients, nail clients, etc) that have spent half their adult life obsessing on something that NO ONE notices but them: a slightly crooked tooth, the tip of a finger that bends just off true – HONESTLY, shit that NO ONE else notices. I’ve seen boobs that are one cup bigger than the other. I’ve seen broken toes that healed crooked. I’ve seen so many things that were so UNIMPORTANT that I can’t remember who they belonged to … because I have my OWN shit that I worry about.

Stop It!

Why the feck are we all so dissatisfied with the body that we live in? Why are ALL, yes ALL of us, so dissatisfied with the body God’s given us? We need to realize that we will NEVER be perfect: PERFECT is a MYTH.

When will we realize that no ONE but us sees those horribly “ugly” parts of ourselves but US? When will we realize that we are as beautiful RIGHT NOW as we are – RIGHT NOW!!! Those things we consider so offensive to the rest of the world don’t matter to the rest of the world because the rest of the world is obsessing with their own bullshit.

We need to accept our bodies as they are and peace with how we look. Having your portraits done will give you a incredible boost of confidence and the chance to see yourself in a new and different light.

Every one of the ladies in this post hold a place near and dear to my heart. The very first (and a couple of the others) are my very best friend and one of the most beautiful women I know. Whenever her photos grace my blog or FB feed, they blow up with comments. The photo up top is the photo that started it all. MsP needed a photo for a calendar. We had a half an hour. I took one shot and this was the photo that went in the calendar. This photo led to the opportunity to work with a local business and shoot their calendar for the next four years. One of the ladies is a very talented make-up artist, another is my tattoo girl and one of them is a community minded business owner.

And I love every one of them.

So … do you (or your SO) have a bike that you want to include in your session? It’s pretty easy to do. Just ride it over and we’ll roll!

How do you see yourself? Studio Rep Elizabeth says:
[pullquote width=”100%” float=”left”]”Hey everybody, I have to say I was extremely nervous and excited to see the finished personal portraits from my photo shoot. I so desperately wanted to see how I truly felt inside in a picture. What I did see was so much more than that. I saw my beauty and the smile that my husband always talks about.[/pullquote]

[pullquote width=”100%” float=”left”]You always think people say things because they are supposed to but I learned that it was genuine. When I saw the picture in the white dress I cried, that’s how I knew what I set out to do was a success. The surgery helped me get smaller, but it was confidence in myself that helped me realize who I am. I’m so glad I took this chance and am more than ecstatic to see what the future shoots bring ❤❤ thank you Jackee.[/pullquote]

How do you see yourself? Who is that person inside you? Is the person inside you who you see when you see a photo of yourself? Are you pleasantly surprised? Would you like to be? Personal portraits aren’t only for the people you love, they are for you, someone you should love because if you love yourself, you can better love others.

Body Image

Body image … what a powerful concept. Our generation, our daughters’ generation, has been bombarded for 40+ years about “body image”, yet I don’t think any of us know what it is, how important it is to our self esteem, how our view of our own bodies – OURSELVES – affects how our daughters see themselves.

Sometimes it’s not even what we see in the mirror, but what another says to us or about us that shapes our feelings. Even if we are truly beautiful (and really, we all are beautiful in some way) a word or sentence or even a look from our past can makes us shudder with the memory and blur the beauty that stares us in the face every day.

No one – not the cutest cheerleader, not Miss Wisconsin, not you, not me – are happy with what we see in the mirror

Change Your View

Every day, look in the mirror and comment on ONE thing you like about yourself. “Wow, I LOVE the color of my eyes.” “I have a great complexion.” “my posture is fantastic.” The more we compliment ourselves, the more self-esteem we gain and the more that nasty little voice i the back of our mind starts zipping it’s shitty little lip.

Perceptions – Who Are You?

Perceptions are amazing. In this day and age of “politically correct” thinking and the public’s outcry of “I am NOT judgemental!” I’ve found that people in general are more judgemental and women are MOST judgemental of themselves.

This first full session with Studio Rep Emily got us talking about first impressions, other peoples’ opinions and how we judge ourselves.

On any given day other people see us as we are THAT day, whether we are dressed for work, dressed for gardening or dressed for a quick run to the gas station for a gallon of milk at six o’clock in the morning. Anyone who sees us bases an opinion on us, whether they know us or not. I tell myself that it doesn’t matter, people who know me know that I don’t always look that way, but REALLY? Somewhere inside me I think everyone is stink eyeing me. Do you do the same thing?

The saying that you never get a chance to make a first impression isn’t as true as what we’ve been lead to believe, at least in a personal way, and never judge a book by its over has never been more true. We can recreate ourselves EVERY day. We can put ourselves out to the world and tell our story a day at a time.

Perception of Glamour
When someone judges you, it isn’t about you. It’s about them and their own insecurities, limitations and needs

Glamour Rep Search for JLReis Photography – Day Two

JLReis Photography Studio Glamour Rep

I’ve worked with so many lovely women since opening my doors, creating some of the most incredible images that I am so PROUD of. With every session I do, I feel more and more strongly that this is what I am meant to do for the rest of my life. Now I am looking for a glamour rep, a boudoir rep, a headshot rep and a dreamshoot rep. All reps can shoot any of the categories, but I will need at least ONE for each.

How I’ll be choosing will be a little different than I have in the past. Most of the women that I currently shoot have children, are over 35 years old, and have great life stories. I want women who will represent my regular client, someone who understands how important it is for women to be confident, brave and comfortable in their own skin. I’m not looking for experienced models, I’m looking for women like ME and YOU.

My reps will be expected to tell all their friends about their amazing experience with JLReis Photography and share their photos on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. These women will be the face of my studio, from July 1st until December 31st. They will have at least three photo sessions with me throughout the year and will be my muses.

The women I choose will be expected to be comfortable enough with their body to pose in lingerie or simulated nudes (you will NEVER AT ANY TIME be expected to pose naked or have nude photos used in any of my advertising). While I will choose the type/theme of the sessions, I will shoot around YOUR schedule. You will be required to sign a model release, allowing me full use of your images on my blog, on Facebook, on Instagram and on Twitter, no restrictions (THIS IS NOT NEGOTIABLE). You will be expected to show off your images and talk about JLReis Photography on your own social media. This is kind of like a job and you will be paid with some of the most spectacular portraits you’ve ever had taken of yourself.

I’ll be working the month of June to choose my reps, I know you’re out there!

Keep your eyes open in the next week or so for more information on my search and how to qualify to be one of my studio representatives.

For now, email me at beautiful@jlreisphotography.com or PM on Facebook with YOUR email address, so that I can add you to my VIP Facebook group.
